The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
