Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
