Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
